End of service announcement

To all current and potential clients:

For the past several days, I've been contemplating about closing my hunting service and had reached my final decision today. After one year and 50 days of providing my hunting service to a total of 146 clients, the Tokyo Hunter service is now officially closed from today onwards. I will no longer be accepting any new requests from anybody except for close friends.

It had always been on my mind that I had to close my hunting service someday, but I never imagined that it would be so soon after the first anniversary of my service. The first 6 months was fairly relaxed as my service was relatively unknown at the time and there weren't a lot of emails and orders to handle. However, as my service and blog site began to grow in popularity, email enquiries and order requests started pouring in to the point where it sometimes took me until 1-2am almost every night to reply to all emails and completing order requests. Keep in mind that I was providing this service as a side business and I always return home from my full-time job at 7-9pm every weeknight. As a result, I no longer had the time to enjoy the things I love like watching anime (still got a long list of shows I've yet to watch), playing video games (my PS3, Wii, and PSP are collecting dust but I do play my DS during trips), building model kits (a current kit project remains untouched for the past 8 months), and the latest toy purchases for my collection are stacked up in a corner and yet to be opened. I am a guy that values my personal time over the opportunity to make more money. And besides, selling stuff on eBay is a whole lot more lucrative (view eBay feedback profile and past auctions) and easier to handle compared to the little commission fees I charged for my service. Keep watch on my auctions page for future listings of exclusive items with cost price starting bids!

I frequently travel to Akihabara and Nakano nearly every weekend when I first started the service, but as time went on, I found that to be too costly and time consuming since I live in Tatebayashi city which is roughly an hour and 30 minutes away by train to Akihabara and add another 30 minutes or so to Nakano. It is difficult to find clients' wanted items as I had to go through each hobby store in Akihabara and Nakano to hunt them down and had to leave empty-handed sometimes, which is why I'm heading down to Tokyo only once a month now or whenever there are events to attend. Add to the fact that HLJ will be relocating to its new office this November in Sano city and I had to move as well to live close to the new office, it will add another hour or more to my commuting time to Tokyo due to the 1 train an hour schedule from Sano to Tatebayashi to change stations for the trip down to Tokyo.

One of the main reaons why I had to close my hunting service is due to the increasing amount of work I had to do at my full-time job, working at home in the evenings and weekends sometimes to get them done, which results in less time to handle clients' emails and order requests and even lesser time for myself. My full-time job will have to come in first priority over everything else.

To clients who still have outstanding orders with me, I will handle your current orders but I won't be taking any more additional requests.

As for the future of this blog site, it will remain open with haul posts, event coverages, new auction listings, and some random postings if I have time to write them. There will be no changes to the Tokyo Hunter name even though I no longer run the hunting service. It's an established name now and I like it, too!

Thus ends the Tokyo Hunter service. It's been a great experience to help out clients from around the world and made lots of good friends along the way.

Thank you very much for your support!

Testimonial from client #124:

Joseph Tsai has got to be one of the greatest assets a collector can have. After looking around for three legend of gokin figures I decided to try out Tokyo Hunters services and boy was I pleasantly surprised. Joseph found them for me, sent me pictures and pricing, and then shipped them out immediately after payment. The whole process from start to finish took less time than most sellers in the U.S. take to ship an item to me domestically. Communication and packaging were top notch! A pleasant experience.

C3xHobby Chara Hobby 2007

This marks my second time attending a Chara Hobby event and I'm rather disappointed to see so few exhibitors there and very low attendee numbers compared to last year's event. Nothing much to see there since most of the stuff on display were already shown at last week's WonderFest 2007 Summer and Gundam Expo Tokyo 2007 events.

Highlights at the event that stood out in my mind are:

S.I.C. Takumi Tamashii Vol. 9 - Lineup include Hiibiki, Robot Detective K, Kamen Rider #1 The First, Cyclone The First. They all look impressive except for KR#1 The First though. Would be nice to see him in an action pose rather than just standing straight. Gonna put him on Cyclone anyway so it doesn't matter.

S.O.C. God Mars - Had the hefty God Mars combining toy during my childhood years. Broken through rough play and thrown away by my mom. Looking forward to see how this one turns out!

Movie Realization EVA-01 - Placed my preorder immediately when it was listed up. Unbelievable bio-mechanical detailing. Can't wait for this piece!

1/1 Scopedog - Finally got to see the 1/1 scale Scopedog in person! My eyes were on the cosplaying girl most of the time though. That girl is hawt!

Max Factory Dragonar-1 - Saw it at WonderFest 2007 Summer and now had more time to take a good look at it. I definitely prefer this one over the S.O.C. Tamashii Spec Dragonar-1.

1/100 Shin Musha Gundam - A custom kit but would love to have a MG kit of this. You hear me, Bandai! Please make one!

Kamen Rider V3 The Next - Prop suit on display at the event along with KR#1 & #2, and bikes. Movie premiers on October 27. Gonna watch it on the first day for sure! I still can't help but feel that they could have changed the helmet design a little bit more. Looks odd to me.

Psycho Gundam resin kit - Saw this at last year's Chara Hobby and still can't get enough of it. If only they'd offer it as a plastic model kit, I'd buy one in a heart beat!

Comiket #72

Hoping to avoid the crowds and lines to get into the halls, I went to attend Comiket #72 on the first day of the event (Friday, 17 August) in the mid afternoon. Upon arrival, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a sea of people (possibly half a million!) still at the event 2 hours before the closing time! The attendance numbers for WonderFest and Chara Hobby were no where near this many people! I can't possibly imagine how many more attended the event during the weekends. It's by far the biggest event I've ever been to in my entire life! This was my first Comiket and no way will I attend another one unless there's something there that I really want to buy there. I thought WonderFest was overcrowded but this is 100 times far worse than that. Combined with the summer heat, plus sweat and stench of the crowd, it's not a very pleasant experience, to say the least.

Since I registered using my HLJ business card for a press pass in order to take pics inside the halls, and written on the registration form that pics taken inside will only be shown on HLJ's website, I can only post the pics I took outside the halls here. My pics taken inside the halls will be posted on HLJ in the next couple of days.

I didn't spend much time outside at the cosplayers area taking pics as most of the cosplayers there weren't all that impressive. Just took some random shots of some cosplayers that caught my eye and had to rush inside the halls before I melt under the hot summer heat.

She's the only cutie I saw at the time. Sweet 'lil Al Azif from Demonbane!

Those living in Japan should be able to recognize who this guy is cosplaying as. Yes, it's the foreign guy from the Navitime ad!

Client testimonial #55

Testimonial from client #120:

Joseph Tsai aka Tokyo Hunter's service is top-notch! While dealing with him, I experienced absolutely no problems. None. It's been my personal experience that there's always at least one problem when doing transactions online through individuals (eBay and web forums). People send things late, do not communicate in a timely manner, or can be rude, etc. Joseph does none of these. Out of all the individual-level online purchases I've made, Joseph's service is by far the best. He knows what he's dealing with, he's extremely quick with responses, his communication is friendly and easy to understand.

The item was securely packaged and was in mint condition when taken out. He takes a picture of the product once he brings back his haul. Joseph also takes a picture of the packed item before he ships it out to further increase your satisfaction. I know this may sound like an advertisement, but I am sincerely pleased with Tokyo Hunter's service. I recommend him to anyone! Please treat him with the same respect he shows you, and I will definitely be using his service again! Thanks Joseph!

Jump Shop @ Aqua City Odaiba

After attending the Gundam Expo Tokyo 2007 event in Ikebukuro, I went to Odaiba to check out the shopping malls and killing time before the big WonderFest 2007 Summer event on the following day. While window shopping in Aqua City Odaiba, I stumbled upon Jump Shop on the third floor, which was set up to celebrate the 10th anniversary of One Piece (my all-time favorite Shonen series!), and selling all sorts of One Piece merchandise, as well as a whole bunch of miscellaneous fun goods from Death Note, Dragon Ball Z, D.Gray-man, Bleach, Naruto and others. Opens from July 6th - September 2nd.

I was quite surprised to find that there was a cross manga of One Piece and Dragon Ball Z! Can anyone tell me if this is an ongoing manga?

Luffy's Devil Fruit! Actual 1/1 size I think.
Gomu Gomu no Mi - Rubber Rubber fruit

Mizu Luffy!

Very cool mural of characters from various manga titles published in Shonen Jump magazine, all dressed up in pirate gear!

Gotta go back there again some day to get Luffy's straw hat!

Looking for cool merchandise of your favorite Shonen Jump series? Check out Mekke Shueisha Shopping Plaza to see what they have on offer, contact tokyohunter@gmail.com, and I'll help with purchasing the items for you.

Gundam Expo Tokyo 2007

I dropped by Ikebukuro last Saturday to check out the Gundam Expo Tokyo 2007 event held at Ikebukuro Sunshine City. Event is held from 11-16 August. Free admission. Upon entry, attendees are greeted with huge 1/10 scale Zeong & RX-78-2 Gundam models, followed by 1/10 scale Zeta Gundam & Hyaku Shiki. The history of Gunpla are explained with a selection of past kits and TV spots, plus a 1/1 scale Zaku head with its mono eye lighting up and moving every couple minutes or so. Already seen it in person twice at the Bandai Museum (link to my August 2006 visit) in Matsudo before they relocated, so the novelty has worn off for me. The platinum RX-78-2 Gundam was on display there behind what I assume are bullet-proof glass with two guards, not letting anyone take pics of the 30 million yen bling. There was a section of the event area dedicated to introducing the new Gundam 00 show with 1/10 scale models of all four main Mobile Suits on display, including tons of upcoming Gundam 00 merchandise. Watched the new trailer but will reserve judgment until after I've watched the first couple of eps. Nothing much caught my attention except for the GFF Shin Musha Gundam and MG Destiny Gundam. Can't wait to grab those!

1/10 scale Mobile Suits on display at the event include:
RX-78-2 Gundam
Zeong
Zeta Gundam
Hyaku Shiki
Freedom Gundam
Gundam Exia
Gundam Dynames
Gundam Kyrios
Gundam Virtue

C3xHobby Chara Hobby 2007 exclusive Gunpla on display include:
1/60 PG RX-78-2 Gundam Ookawa illustration ver.
1/100 Live concert color Zaku Warrior extra finish ver.
1/100 MG Char custom Z'gok extra finish ver.
1/144 HGUC Char custom Rick Dom coating ver.
Code Geass 1/35 Mechanic Collection Lancelot color coating ver.

MG Char custom Z'gok extra finish and Lancelot color coating ver. look tempting. May have to grab them for my collection at this weekend's C3xHobby Chara Hobby 2007 event.

WonderFest 2007 Summer haul pics

The two boxes of exclusives I shipped from WonderFest came in this morning. Way earlier than expected. Big thanks goes out to Sagawa Express. If it weren't for them providing delivery service at the event, I'd probably only be able to carry back 30% of this haul due to the packaging size of most of the items. At the end of the day, I managed to purchase roughly 80% of clients' requested items and got some extras for a select few waiting in queue for the exclusives, too.

Ignis the White event limited ver. was the first item I lined up for due to it's limited quantity. I was planning to get in line for Alter's Fate/Zero Saber & Irisviel set after purchasing Ignis but the line had reached to about 300 people long, stretching all the way outside of the building with people melting under the hot summer heat. I decided to skip it because it'll be at least an hour and 30 minutes wait in line and had I lined up for one, I probably won't be able to get the rest of the exclusives. Saber & Irisviel set sold out within the first hour and 30 minutes.

Here's a list of items I got for my clients:

Atelier-Sai
Xenosaga EPIII 1/8 KOS-MOS ver. 4 Fatima Gras mode PVC - 200 pcs LTD – 7,000 yen

CM's Corporation
Transformers Zone Cybertron Commander Dai Atlas – 4,200 yen

Good Smile Company
Fate/stay night Nendoroid Hetare Saber Alter – 1,500 pcs LTD – 2 pieces - 3,000 yen each
Fate/tiger colosseum Saber Lion stuffed doll – 1,000 pcs LTD – 2,500 yen
Nendoroid Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya bunny girl set – 2,000 pcs LTD – 2 pieces - 7,000 yen each

Griffon Enterprise
Disgaea 1/7 Etna resin kit – 200 pcs LTD – 4,800 yen

GSI Creos
Pinky:st weapon set – 2 pieces - 2,000 yen each

Hobby Japan
Queen's Blade Pinky P Chara Airi resin kit – 2,500 yen

Kaiyodo
Evangelion New Movie Ver. Revoltech EVA-01 + Positron Rifle set – 3 pieces - 3,000 yen each
Evangelion New Movie Ver. Revoltech EVA-00 + ESV shield set – 3 pieces - 3,000 yen each
RevoPlier - 2 pieces - FREE

Max Factory
Capcom vs SNK 2 1/6 Mai Shiranui extra color ver. PVC - 1,500 pcs LTD – 2 pieces - 7,800 yen each
Summer clothing Haruhi & “Adventures of Mikuru Asahina” expansion set PVC – 2,000 pcs LTD – 2 pieces - 6,000 yen each

Medicom Toy
Be@rbrick 100% Transformers 2pc set – 2 pieces - 1,890 yen each
Lion Maru G RAH Shishi Tora – 2 pieces - 14,000 yen each

Orchid Seed
Ikki Tousen 1/7 Ryofu Housen goth loli ver. PVC – 200 pcs LTD – 6,800 yen
Jingai Makyo 1/7 Ignis The White event limited ver. PVC – 200 pcs LTD – 11,700 yen

Takara Tomy
Evangelion Microman Rei Bandaged Ver. - 1,500 yen

Volks

Neon Genesis Evangelion 1/6 Rei Ayanami completed statue - 15,540 yen
Neon Genesis Evangelion 1/6 Asuka Langley completed statue - 15,540 yen

Yujin
Shining Wind SRSP Zecty Eve - 1,000 pcs LTD - 2 pieces - 2,000 yen each

Yes, this is what the most requested Orchid Seed's Ignis The White event limited ver. packaging looks like. Packed inside a bland white box with a sticker identifying the item. Can't they even slap a picture of the item on the box? Their Ryofu Housen goth loli ver. is also packed in a bland white box.

WonderFest 2007 Summer

My WonderFest 2007 Summer coverage is up! Click here to check out the pics!

I could have taken more pics but I was too dead tired after running from booth to booth, lining up for an average of 30 minutes per booth, purchasing exclusives for clients, then packing them for shipping back to my place.

This is my third WF experience and second time attending a summer WF event. Overall, it was quite an interesting event with tons of new announcements, several of which I just can't wait to get my hands on!

These are on top of my buy list:

Yamato Shunya Yamashita's Rei Ayanami PVC - Finally, a PVC release of REFLECT's resin kit! Been waiting for a PVC version since I saw REFLECT's resin kit offered at last year's World Hobby Festival #15.

Hyper Fate Collection Saber Alter - Not a big fan of the Fate/stay night series but I do love Kenji Ando's work! Got the first Saber figure from the series so I'm definitely picking this one up.

Kaiyodo Revoltech Shin Getter-1 - About damn time they make a Revoltech figure of my all time favorite super robot! "STONER SUNSHINE!"

Max Factory Karas - No price or release date yet. I want one now, damnit!

Mega House Action Works Gavan - My childhood hero in shining armor! Got one pre-ordered here.

Organic Hellsing Alucard - Tiny little thing at roughly 10cm tall (or more) to the top of the chair but that's not stopping me from getting one!

Mega House Claymore Clare PVC - Heck yeah! I'm not into collecting female figures much but this I definitely want! Love the show to bits. The show kinda reminds me of Berserk but with all female characters.

I forgot which dealer table this was at but this Bubble Head Nurse resin kit from Silent Hill 2 is bloody amazing! Here's hoping one of the toy companies will release a PVC version of it soon!

After checking out pics of new announcements at this summer's WF, what's on your buy list?

WonderFest 2007 Summer haul preview

Just got back from WonderFest 2007 Summer. Too tired right now so I'm not gonna write a long post about the event at this time. I'll have event pics up by tomorrow. For now, here's a preview of the exclusives I got for my clients at the event. Yes, these are the only three items I brought back with me today. The rest were packed in two boxes at the event and should be delivered to my doorstep in the next day or two. If only I had found out about the delivery company being available at the previous two WFs I attended, it would have saved my shoulders from the stress and agonizing pain I had to endure in hauling all those stuff back! Anyway, here's a brief preview of the stuff I got and more to come when the two boxes of exclusives arrive.

Good Smile Company Nendoroid Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya bunny girl set - 7,000 yen

Max Factory Summer clothing Haruhi & “Adventures of Mikuru Asahina” expansion set PVC - 6,000 yen

Client testimonial #54

Testimonial from client #118:

I came across Joseph's site while searching for a somewhat rare figure, the only one's I had found up till this point were bootlegs on eBay. I got in contact with Joseph and he replied to my query instantly with all the relevant information. Not long after, the figure I had been searching so long for arrived on my doorstep. To say I was pleased with both the figure & Joseph's services would be an understatement, the figure arrived quickly & well packaged, while Joseph was very friendly & in constant contact regarding the whole transaction. Kudos to you, Tokyo Hunter!

There won't be any sightings next Saturday and Sunday either. I'll be attending Gundam Expo Tokyo 2007 on the 11th and the big WonderFest event on the 12th. My WonderFest coverage will go up on HobbyLink Japan hopefully within the week after WonderFest.

Uchimizukko 2007

I finally met up with the famous Danny Choo today who came in full Stormtrooper armor to attend the Uchimizukko 2007 event held in front of the Akihabara JR station. Danny's a cool and friendly guy to talk to and looking forward to meeting him again in the upcoming summer events!

The Uchimizukko event had maids from all maid cafes in Akihabara lined up at the event space, held small wooden buckets (Oke) of water in their hands, and throwing water on the ground and attendees in the opposite line that are also throwing water on the maids. There was not enough water to cool me and particularly Danny in his suit as we baked under the hot sun taking pics of the event, so we left after we had taken sufficient pics in the first 30 minutes and head for lunch, then cool ourselves down in the air conditioned AsoBitCity store.

Click here for a selection of my favorite shots of the event and check out Danny Choo's post for the complete coverage and the rest of my photos!

Client testimonial #52

Testimonial from client #106:

I started using Joseph's services after I bought an item from him on ebay. I was looking for more items, and Joseph replied immediately. Joseph is quick on every part of the transaction process, from ordering to shipping. He also gives you shipping options, something most other sellers are unwilling to do. Overall, his communication and response time are top notch, and his fees more than fair. I will be doing more business with him.
